About Mathura and Vrindavan: Braj Bhoomi Krishna Yatra

The Braj Bhoomi — the 84-kos region around Mathura and Vrindavan on the Yamuna river where Hindu tradition holds that Lord Krishna spent his childhood and youth — is one of India's most concentrated pilgrim landscapes and a paradise for the vegetarian traveller.

  • The entire region is governed by a strict pure-vegetarian ethos backed by municipal regulation: meat, fish, and alcohol are banned within the holy zone.
  • This focused two-day itinerary covers the two essential temple cities — Mathura, Krishna's birthplace, and Vrindavan, his pastoral playground 12 km away — and is easily added on to a Delhi or Agra trip (Mathura is 145 km from Delhi, 60 km from Agra).
  • Day one is Mathura: Krishna Janmabhoomi complex (the temple marking Krishna's traditional birth location, adjacent to the Eidgah — visit early to avoid crowds and respect heightened security), Dwarkadhish Temple, Vishram Ghat sunset boat ride on the Yamuna, and the evening Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat.
  • Day two is Vrindavan: dawn darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir (the 1864 sanctum where the deity is revealed only in brief curtained darshans — the heartbeat of Vrindavan devotional life), the dazzling white-marble Prem Mandir (opened 2012, illuminated spectacularly in the evening), the ISKCON Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir (global Hare Krishna headquarters), and the mystic Nidhivan tulsi grove (closed at sunset by ancient custom).
  • For the vegetarian traveller, the Braj is one of India's great food regions: Mathura's street-food signature is the legendary Mathura ke Pede (milk-mawa fudge sold by century-old shops like Brijwasi and Shankar Mithai Wala), the morning Hing Kachori with aloo-subzi, and chilled thick lassi in earthen kulhads near the temples.
  • Vrindavan's satvik (no-onion, no-garlic) tradition is exceptional — try the ISKCON Govinda restaurant's prasad thali and the chappan-bhog mithai shops around Banke Bihari.
  • October to March is the comfortable window; the August Janmashtami and March Holi festivals draw enormous crowds.
