Darjeeling Tea & Toy Train

Darjeeling is designed to be savoured slowly — the mountain air demands a deliberate pace, the tea estate walks reward unhurried attention, and the Tiger Hill sunrise justifies an early alarm regardless of how much the warm blanket protests.

• This three-day itinerary balances the hill station's headline experiences with the quieter pleasures of tea tasting, Buddhist monastery visits, and the gentle social culture of its heritage bakeries.
• Day 1 begins with arrival by shared jeep from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) — the 3-hour climb through progressively taller tea bushes and misty ridges is a cinematic approach.
• Check into a guesthouse on the Mall Road or the Chowrasta (the main pedestrian square) with a direct Kanchenjunga view if possible — these book quickly.
• Afternoon: Mall Road walk, Chowrasta square, the Happy Valley Tea Estate (3 km from the town centre — walking-distance, open for factory tours and tasting 8 AM-4 PM, Tuesday-Saturday (closed Monday)).
• Evening: Glenary's Bakery (since 1935) for hot chocolate and cheesecake, watching the Himalayan horizon go orange at sunset.
• Day 2 begins at 3:45 AM for Tiger Hill — a pre-booked shared jeep or sunrise taxi is essential.
