About

Sultanpur National Park is the NCR's best-loved birding destination — a compact wetland sanctuary at Sultanpur village, about 15 kilometres west of Gurugram on the road to Farrukhnagar.

  • Small in area but internationally significant, it is built around a shallow seasonal lake (jheel) that, from late autumn through early spring, fills with thousands of waterbirds and becomes one of the finest and most accessible places near Delhi to watch migratory birds.
  • More than two hundred and fifty species have been recorded here across the year.
  • In winter the lake and its margins host flocks of migratory ducks, geese, pelicans, flamingos, spoonbills, storks and waders that travel down flyways from Central Asia and Siberia, alongside resident egrets, herons, kingfishers, peafowl and raptors.
  • A raised earthen path loops around the wetland, dotted with watchtowers and hides that let you scan the water without disturbing the birds, and an interpretation centre near the gate introduces the sanctuary's ecology.
  • It is an easy, flat, family-friendly circuit — best walked slowly, early in the morning, with binoculars.
  • For vegetarian travellers, it is best to plan food around the visit: options at the sanctuary itself are limited, but Gurugram's many pure-vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurants are a short drive back toward the city for a meal before or after.
  • Carry your own water and snacks for the walk.

Practical notes

the park is closed on Tuesdays, and — importantly — it closes entirely for the monsoon and off-season, roughly from June to September, reopening for the birding season. Tickets are very inexpensive. The best months by far are November to February, and the best time of day is soon after opening, when the birds are most active and the light is soft. Wear neutral clothing, bring binoculars or a zoom lens, carry sun protection, and allow two to three hours to walk the loop at an unhurried, bird-watching pace.

History & Significance

History

Sultanpur's wetland was long known to birdwatchers before it was protected as a bird sanctuary in 1972 and later upgraded to a national park.

  • Centred on a shallow seasonal lake on the Central Asian flyway, it was set aside specifically to protect the huge numbers of resident and migratory birds that gather there each winter.

Significance

Sultanpur National Park is the National Capital Region's premier birdwatching site — a small but internationally important wetland where, in winter, hundreds of resident and migratory species make one of the most accessible great bird spectacles near Delhi.
