Narara Marine National Park (Narara Reef)

Narara Bet is the most accessible window onto India's oldest marine sanctuary, the Gulf of Kutch Marine National Park, and one of the few places on the subcontinent where you can walk out across a living intertidal reef without ever getting into deep water.

• It sits on the Saurashtra coast near the industrial town of Vadinar, in Jamnagar district, and is reached along the northern shoreline that curves toward Dwarka; treat it as a longer coastal excursion rather than a quick temple-town detour.
• When the tide falls, the sea withdraws several hundred metres to expose a broad, glistening flat of sand, mud and rock, and a whole miniature ocean is suddenly laid bare underfoot.
• The experience is a slow, guided walk timed precisely to low water.
• Forest-department and local naturalist guides lead small groups out across the flats, stopping to point out creatures most visitors have only seen in books: cushion-like starfish, brittle stars, spiny sea urchins, hermit crabs shuffling in borrowed shells, delicate sea anemones that fold shut at a touch, sponges, sea cucumbers, blennies darting through tidal pools and, on lucky mornings, a well-camouflaged octopus.
• Patches of live coral and colourful sea slugs reward those who look closely.
• Everything is observed in place and left untouched; guides insist you neither pick up nor pocket a single shell, because this is a strictly protected reserve.
• Because the reef is a fragile ecosystem, visits require a permit from the Marine National Park office in Jamnagar and are only possible during daylight low tides, which shift through the month.
• The walk suits families and curious first-time naturalists, but wear old shoes you do not mind soaking, carry sun protection and drinking water, and follow your guide's footing closely.
• Narara itself has no eateries, so carry a packed vegetarian meal from your hotel.
• For a proper sit-down meal on the way back, Jamnagar is a stronghold of pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiyawadi cooking, with unlimited thali houses serving rotla, ghee-laden dal, seasonal shaak, farsan and buttermilk; Vadinar's bazaar has simple pure-veg snack and farsan stalls.
• Choose clearly signed pure-veg Gujarati thali restaurants and stick to freshly cooked food.
