Bhanvad (Jethwa Heritage Town)

Set in the low, scrub-covered hinterland where the Barda Hills roll down toward the Kathiyawad plain, Bhanvad is a modest market town in Devbhumi Dwarka district that carries an outsized slice of Saurashtra's medieval history.

• By tradition it was founded by a Rana of the Jethwa (Jethva) Rajput dynasty in the early fourteenth century, after the clan's fabled hill capital of Ghumli, deeper in the Barda range, was sacked and abandoned.
• Local accounts place the move around 1313 CE and credit a ruler remembered as Bhanji, whose name is said to survive in the town itself — though, as with much of the Jethwa chronicle, the precise dates and personalities are debated by historians.
• What is not in doubt is that Bhanvad became one of the fortified refuges from which the displaced dynasty regrouped before its long westward drift toward Ranpur, Chhaya and eventually Porbandar.
• For today's traveller, Bhanvad is less a monument to tick off than a living base camp.
• It is the natural gateway to the ruins of Ghumli, a short drive into the hills, where the magnificent Navlakha temple — among the oldest and largest surviving temples in Gujarat — and the carved Vikia and Son Kansari step-wells lie half-swallowed by forest.
• The same road delivers you into the Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a compact, little-visited reserve of teak, flame-of-the-forest and seasonal streams that shelters leopard, hyena, blue bull (nilgai) and a rich cast of birds.
• Bhanvad's own weekly bazaar, temple lanes and the weathered remnants of its old town wall reward an unhurried morning's wander.
• The town works well as a quiet inland counterpoint to the coastal pilgrim rush of Dwarka, which lies to the north, with Porbandar and the Arabian Sea an easy day-trip to the south-west — making Bhanvad a rewarding detour for anyone tracing Saurashtra's less-trodden heritage.
• Food in Bhanvad is unfussy, home-style and reliably vegetarian, in keeping with the Kathiyawadi countryside around it.
• Small pure-veg Gujarati thali houses and bhojanalayas along the main bazaar serve the classic unlimited thali — bajra rotla with white butter, garlic-tempered lasan chutney, seasonal shaak, kadhi, dal and rice — alongside simple farsan, fresh masala chai and, in the cooler months, jaggery-rich Kathiyawadi sweets.
• For a wider choice of pure-veg restaurants, sit-down thali halls and pilgrim canteens, travellers usually stock up in Porbandar or Dwarka before or after the Ghumli–Barda excursion.
