Bet Dwarka Lighthouse

Out at the far edge of Bet Dwarka — the low, sandy island also called Beyt or Shankhodhar, reached by ferry across a shimmering channel from the mainland jetty at Okha — a lighthouse stands watch over the Gulf of Kutch.

• By tradition Bet Dwarka is tied to Lord Krishna, believed to be the place where he lived and where his devotee Sudama is remembered, and the island's small lanes hang heavy with pilgrim energy around its temples.
• The lighthouse offers something quieter: a working navigational tower marking the approaches for the fishing craft and cargo vessels that thread these shallow, reef-strewn waters, and a vantage point where the noise of the shrine-side crowds falls away and only the wind and the sea remain.
• Getting here is half the pleasure.
• Passenger ferries shuttle continuously between the Okha jetty and Bet Dwarka through daylight hours, a short crossing over jade-and-turquoise shallows dotted with gulls and the occasional dolphin.
• From the island's landing, the lighthouse sits toward the seaward side, a walk or a shared-auto ride past coral-stone walls, drying nets and salt-bleached boats.
• The reward at the top of the approach is a wide, uninterrupted horizon: the Arabian Sea opening out on one flank, the mangrove-fringed channel and the mainland haze on the other, and pale sandbars surfacing at low tide.
• Time your visit for the cooler light.
• Early morning brings soft gold over the water and calmer ferries, while the late afternoon delivers a long, glowing sunset that many travellers rate as the island's finest sight.
• Bring sun protection, water and sturdy footwear — the terrain is sandy and exposed, and shade is scarce.
• Access up the tower itself may be restricted to viewing hours set by the lighthouse authority, so treat the climb as a bonus rather than a certainty; the coastal outlook and sea breeze are the real draw.
• Photographers will find the whitewashed structure against the blue an easy, satisfying frame.
• For food, keep it simple and stay pure-vegetarian.
• Bet Dwarka's cluster of pilgrim eateries near the Keshavraiji (Dwarkadhish) temple serves modest vegetarian thalis, khichdi and hot chai, and small stalls sell fresh fruit, roasted snacks and buttermilk — handy before or after the ferry.
• Back on the mainland, Okha and the Dwarka temple town hold pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses and bhojanalayas dishing up unlimited rotli, shaak, dal-bhaat, farsan and jaggery-sweet touches.
• Carry a full water bottle, as reliable options thin out toward the island's exposed seaward edge.
