Chennai Lighthouse

Chennai Lighthouse is a distinctive maritime landmark on the Marina shore. Its visitor purpose is different from a beach promenade walk: plan specifically for the museum or viewing gallery currently admitting the public, and confirm operational restrictions before travelling.

The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships describes the present structure as a forty-six-metre reinforced-concrete tower with a triangular form and red-and-white bands. Notice how its shape and coastal position relate to its navigational role, rather than viewing it only as a skyline backdrop.

The modern lighthouse began functioning on 10 January 1977. It follows earlier Chennai lights, including the nineteenth-century installation at the High Court building. Use the museum interpretation, when open, to understand the change from earlier lighting arrangements to the present coastal station.

This remains an active lighthouse, so public admission applies only to the authorised visitor route. The presence of an electric lift does not establish unrestricted access to every floor or operational room. Follow staff directions around the museum, lift and viewing areas.
