Company Garden, Guptar Ghat

Company Garden is a green riverside park set on the bank of the Saryu (Ghaghra) at Guptar Ghat, on the Faizabad Cantonment edge of Ayodhya.

• Its name preserves a piece of colonial history: across nineteenth-century India, the East India Company and later British administrations laid out ornamental 'Company Bagh' or 'Company Garden' plantations in cantonment and civil-station towns — formal botanical gardens with imported and native trees, geometric flower beds and shaded avenues meant for genteel promenading.
• Ayodhya-Faizabad's Company Garden belongs to that lineage of secular colonial-era horticulture, and today it survives as a leafy, well-treed public garden that has recently been upgraded into a landscaped heritage-recreation space beside one of the district's most atmospheric ghats.
• The renovated garden is laid out with broad lawns, flowering plantations, ornamental fountains and paved walking paths that draw families, morning walkers and picnicking pilgrims.
• Within the garden grounds stands a modest shrine to Mari Mata, a folk mother-goddess venerated in the local devotional tradition — a small, quiet corner of worship that sits comfortably within the garden's larger role as a place of leisure and greenery.
• Benches under mature trees, open sky over the wide river, and the sound of water make it an easy, restful stop rather than a ticketed attraction, and it is best appreciated as a gentle counterpoint to Ayodhya's busier temple circuit.
• The garden takes its bearings from adjacent Guptar Ghat, one of the most revered stretches of the Saryu.
• Devotees hold that Lord Rama performed jal samadhi — his final withdrawal from the earthly world into the river — at this spot, and the name 'Guptar', from gupt (hidden), echoes that belief.
• The stone ghat with its riverfront steps was built in the early nineteenth century by Raja Darshan Singh, and the surrounding cluster includes the Chakra Harji Vishnu temple, the Narsingh temple and a Sita-Ram shrine.
• Company Garden is distinct from the ghat itself and from Ayodhya's other landscaped parks such as Tulsi Udyan and Ram Katha Park — here the draw is the shady colonial-era garden and the wide, tranquil river view rather than a single monument.
• For vegetarian travellers, Ayodhya is a strictly pure-vegetarian pilgrimage city, and no food is sold inside the garden itself.
• Carry water and fruit for a riverside picnic, and plan a meal at the pure-veg bhojanalayas and sweet shops back toward the Cantonment and the main Ayodhya temple town, where thali houses, kachori-sabzi counters and dahi-jalebi stalls serve the pilgrim crowd.
• A visit pairs naturally with an early walk down to Guptar Ghat for the river breeze before the day warms.
