Sabarmati Ashram combines Gandhi’s historic riverside campus with the Gandhi Memorial Museum. It is a place for understanding the freedom movement, everyday ashram life and the ideas of self-reliance and nonviolence, with current conservation restrictions shaping the permitted visitor route.
Gandhi’s Ahmedabad community moved from Kochrab to the Sabarmati site in June 1917. He lived here until 1930. On 12 March that year, the Dandi March began from the ashram, giving the campus a central place in the history of the Salt Satyagraha.
The trust identifies the Gandhi Memorial Museum as a Charles Correa building inaugurated in 1963. Its named galleries include Gandhi in Ahmedabad, paintings and My Life is My Message. Read a selection of displays rather than trying to absorb every panel in one quick circuit.
The trust’s current notice says Gandhi’s former home can be viewed from outside, while interior visitor entry is temporarily restricted for conservation. Respect that distinction when planning photographs or explaining the visit to children. An older description of the house does not override the current notice.
Historic cottages, communal spaces and the museum belong to this single ashram visit. Follow the route actually open on the day and ask staff before approaching an unfamiliar building. Archives, residences and working institutional spaces do not automatically form part of ordinary admission.
