Zampa Gateway, Diu

Zampa Gateway is the grand old landward entrance to Diu town, the point where travellers crossing onto Diu island have passed through the town's fortified wall for centuries.

• Diu was held by the Portuguese from the mid-sixteenth century until 1961, and much of the surviving urban fabric — squares, churches, the sea-facing fort and this ceremonial gate — dates from that long colonial era.
• The gateway takes the form of a deep, thick-walled stone arch pierced through the town rampart, once the controlled choke-point through which carts, pilgrims and traders entered the walled settlement from the mainland side.
