Willingdon Dam, Junagadh (Girnar Foothills)

At the eastern edge of Junagadh, where the town gives way to the great volcanic massif of Girnar, the Willingdon Dam holds back a quiet sheet of water against a backdrop of forested peaks.

• This early-twentieth-century stone reservoir was raised during the era of the princely Junagadh state and named after Lord Willingdon, then a senior figure in British India, to secure a dependable water supply for the town below.
• Today it is less a feat of engineering than a much-loved local escape — a place where Junagadh families come to sit on the embankment, watch the light move across the ridges, and breathe the cooler air that drifts down from the hills.
• The setting is the reservoir's great gift.
• The Girnar range, sacred to both Hindu and Jain pilgrims and crowned by temples reached via thousands of stone steps, rises directly beyond the water, so the dam doubles as an unhurried viewpoint over one of Gujarat's most revered landscapes.
• Damodar Kund and the Girnar taleti (the foothill base that marks the traditional start of the Girnar climb) lie close by, making Willingdon Dam an easy add-on to a pilgrimage or a Girnar day out.
• The masonry wall, weathered and lichen-flecked, carries the understated character of Junagadh-state public works, and the calm water mirrors the peaks on still mornings.
• The dam is at its most beautiful in and just after the monsoon, roughly July to November, when the reservoir brims, the surrounding scrub turns emerald, and thin waterfalls thread down the Girnar slopes.
• This is prime picnic season, and the embankment fills with families, students and photographers at golden hour.
• In the dry months the water recedes but the views hold, and early-winter mornings are crisp and clear.
• Come in daylight, carry your own water, take your litter home with you, and treat the site as the tranquil, unticketed retreat that it is.

• The town's best-known address is Geeta Lodge, a long-running pure-veg institution near the railway junction serving unlimited Gujarati thalis of dal, kadhi, seasonal shaak, rotli and rice.

• Road offer khaman, fafda and — in season — Junagadh's celebrated Kesar mango.
