Nagoa Beach

Sweeping in a broad, sheltered crescent on the southern shore of Diu island, Nagoa Beach is the flagship strand of this former Portuguese enclave and the natural climax of a Somnath-circuit road trip that swaps temple bells for the hush of the Arabian Sea.

• Its signature horseshoe curve keeps the water calm and shallow well out from the sand, which — together with the gentle gradient — makes it one of the safest-feeling swimming beaches on the Saurashtra coast.
• Framing the arc are stands of the distinctive Hoka palm (a branching, forked-trunk palm rarely seen elsewhere in India, said to have arrived with the Portuguese), whose silhouettes give Nagoa its instantly recognisable, faintly tropical character.
• The beach sits about seven kilometres west of Diu town, near Nagoa and Bucharwada villages, and is comfortably reached by auto-rickshaw, hired scooter or taxi.
• Mornings are quiet and good for long walks along the firm sand; afternoons bring the low-key buzz of day-trippers; and evenings deliver the payoff — a wide, unobstructed western horizon that turns the sky amber and rose at sunset.
• A row of operators offers optional paid activities such as banana-boat rides, jet-skiing, parasailing and camel or horse rides along the sand, while vendors sell tender coconut, corn and cold drinks.
• Entry to the beach itself is free.
• Nagoa pairs naturally with the rest of compact Diu: the star-shaped Diu Fort and the old town's whitewashed Portuguese-era lanes, the quieter Ghoghla and Jallandhar beaches, and the Naida Caves — all a short hop away.
• Frame it as the relaxed coastal coda to the pilgrim towns inland: Somnath's Jyotirlinga and the Prabhas tirths, Junagadh's Uparkot Fort and the sacred hill of Girnar, and the lions of Gir all lie within a day's drive north and east.
• For food, keep to the island's pure-vegetarian kitchens rather than the seafood-leaning shacks along the sand.
• Several pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses in Diu town and near Ghoghla serve unlimited thalis — rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi, rice, farsan and jaggery-sweet touches — alongside simple pure-veg cafes doing sabudana khichdi, dhokla, poha, masala dosa, sandwiches, paratha and filter coffee or masala chai.
• Ask specifically for pure-veg establishments, as many coastal eateries here are mixed; the temple-town belt around Somnath and Veraval, an easy drive inland, offers a wider spread of dedicated pure-veg thali restaurants and pilgrim bhojanalayas.
