Majevadi Gate (Historic City Gate)

Standing astride one of the old approach roads into Junagadh, the Majevadi Gate (locally the Majevadi Darwaza) is a handsome survivor of the walled town's princely-era defences.

• In the days when Junagadh was the seat of a Nawabi state at the foot of the sacred Girnar hills, the old town was ringed by fortifications pierced by a series of ceremonial gateways, each named for the direction or village it faced.
• Majevadi Gate took its name from the road running east toward Majevadi, and today it remains a much-loved civic landmark that anchors a busy market quarter of the city.
• Architecturally the gate is a broad masonry archway flanked by squat bastion-like piers, its parapet and spandrels carrying restrained ornamental detailing typical of Kathiawar's late fort-town builders.
• Unlike a purely military sally-port, this was a stately entrance meant to impress travellers and pilgrims arriving for the great Girnar climb, and its scale still reads as generous when you stand beneath the arch and watch the daily churn of scooters, hand-carts and thali-bound families pass through.
• Precise construction dates for individual Junagadh gates are not always firmly documented, so it is best appreciated as a general legacy of the town's 18th–19th-century princely period rather than pinned to a single year.
• For travellers basing themselves in Somnath, Junagadh sits roughly 85 kilometres north and makes an easy day excursion paired with Uparkot Fort, the Ashokan rock edict and the Girnar trailhead.
• The gate itself needs only ten to twenty minutes — a photograph, a slow walk through the arch, a look at the layered plasterwork — but it rewards the curious as a free, atmospheric slice of the old walled city that most itineraries speed past.
• For food, keep to the pilgrim-belt pure-vegetarian kitchens around the old town: Junagadh is famous for unlimited Kathiyawadi–Gujarati thalis, and long-running pure-veg thali houses such as Geeta Lodge near the station area serve rotli, shaak, dal-bhaat, kadhi and jaggery-sweet touches.
• Simple pure-veg Gujarati thali restaurants and farsan-and-fafda shops near Kalwa Chowk round out an unhurried, wholly meat-free lunch.
