Gir National Park Lion Safari (Sinh Sadan Gate, Sasan Gir)

Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is the only place on earth where the Asiatic lion still roams free, and the Forest Department's Sinh Sadan orientation centre at Sasan Gir is the main gateway into it.

• Roughly 40 km from Veraval and Somnath, this rugged tract of teak, acacia and dry deciduous scrub over the Kathiawar hills shelters the world's entire wild population of Panthera leo persica, brought back from the brink of extinction through decades of protection that began under the Nawabs of Junagadh and continued after 1947.
• Alongside the lions, Gir is home to leopards, striped hyenas, jackals, sambar, spotted deer, nilgai, wild boar, marsh crocodiles in the Kamleshwar reservoir, and more than 300 bird species, making every drive a broader wildlife lottery rather than a single-species hunt. Access is strictly regulated.
• Safaris run in open jeeps (Gypsies) on fixed forest routes, and every vehicle needs a permit issued against the online booking system, along with an assigned Forest Department guide who joins you at Sinh Sadan.
• Numbers per slot are capped to limit disturbance, so booking well ahead is essential in peak winter weeks.
• Sinh Sadan itself functions as the permit-verification and orientation point, distinct from the smaller Devalia (Gir Interpretation Zone) enclosure a short drive away, where sightings are near-guaranteed inside a fenced area but the experience is more managed.
• The full national-park safari is the wilder, more authentic option for those willing to accept that lions are wild and never guaranteed.
• The park is open only in the dry season, roughly mid-October to mid-June, and closes through the monsoon for the animals' breeding period; morning and afternoon slots suit the cooler light and higher activity.
• Winter, from December to March, is the most comfortable time, while the hot pre-monsoon weeks of April and May concentrate animals around waterholes and often reward patient visitors with the best sightings.
• For food, keep to the pure-vegetarian kitchens of Sasan Gir village and the resort dining rooms, most of which serve unlimited Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thalis of rotla, shaak, dal, kadhi, khichdi and buttermilk, usually to advance order.
• Simple pure-veg dhabas near the Sinh Sadan gate offer masala chai, poha, thepla, fafda and hot bhajiya for the early safari start, and bottled water and packed vegetarian snacks are easy to carry in.
• As Gujarat is a dry state, no alcohol is served anywhere in the belt, and vegetarian travellers will find the pilgrim-and-safari circuit around Somnath and Sasan very easy to eat their way through.
