Gir Crocodile Breeding & Rearing Centre, Sasan

Tucked beside the Sinh Sadan reception complex at the heart of Sasan, the Gir Crocodile Breeding & Rearing Centre is one of the quietest and most rewarding stops on any Gir itinerary — and, best of all, it costs nothing to enter.

• While the crowds queue for the celebrated Asiatic lion safaris, this modest conservation facility offers a close, unhurried look at the mugger, or marsh crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), a native reptile whose numbers were once dangerously low across Gujarat's rivers and reservoirs.
• The centre grew out of a crocodile rehabilitation and restocking programme launched in the 1970s to reverse that decline, and it has since become an easy, family-friendly add-on to the wildlife experience.
• The logic of the place is simple and quietly moving.
• Eggs and hatchlings are collected and reared in a series of shallow, walled pools where the young crocodiles are protected from predators during their most vulnerable years.
• Visitors walk a short circuit past these enclosures, watching juveniles of graded sizes bask on concrete banks or hang motionless at the waterline, jaws slightly parted.
• Once the animals reach a viable size, they are released into the Hiran, Machundri, Shingoda and other watercourses that thread through the Gir forest, and into the sprawling Kamleshwar reservoir — the so-called lifeline of Gir — where healthy mugger populations now thrive.
• Informational signboards explain the biology of the species and the role of these apex reptiles in keeping river ecosystems in balance.
• A visit takes only twenty to thirty minutes, making it a natural pairing with the Gir Interpretation Zone, the orientation centre and the safari booking office, all clustered nearby.
• Early morning and late afternoon, when the crocodiles are most active and the light is soft, are the best times to come.
• It is an educational, gentle stop that children in particular love.
• For food, Sasan is a small forest town, so plan to eat at your lodge or at the pure-veg Gujarati thali restaurants clustered near Sinh Sadan and the main road, where unlimited Kathiyawadi thalis of rotla, shaak, dal, kadhi, rice and jaggery are the reliable staple.
• Several hotel dining rooms and simple bhojanalayas serve wholesome vegetarian fare; ask for a pure-veg kitchen, request lighter, less-spiced portions if travelling with children, and carry water and fruit for the safari itself.
