Zampa Gateway, Diu

Guarding the historic approach to Diu's old walled town, the Zampa Gateway is one of the most photographed relics of the island's long Portuguese chapter, when Diu was a fortified trading outpost on the Arabian Sea.

• Built into the defensive wall that once ringed the settlement, the gateway is worked in warm crimson and ochre sandstone, its arch framed by carvings that blend European and Indian sensibilities — rampant lions, robed guardian figures, and a sculpted panel often read as a priest with attendants.
• Weathered by centuries of salt wind, the stone has softened to a rosy glow that turns especially rich in the low light of early morning and late afternoon, making the gate a favourite of photographers and slow wanderers.
• Diu changed hands and character many times, and the Zampa Gateway survives as neutral, tangible testimony to that layered past rather than to any single ruler.
• As you pass beneath the arch you step from the newer road grid into the tight, atmospheric lanes of the old town, where pastel Portuguese-influenced houses, wooden balconies, and small squares still follow their sixteenth- and seventeenth-century plan.
• Close to the gate stands a small carved chattri-style pavilion and a old water cistern, both worth a pause; interpretive detail is sparse, so the pleasure here is unhurried looking rather than ticking off facts.
• The gateway sits within easy reach of Diu's other heritage set-pieces — the sprawling seaward Diu Fort, the Panikotha sea-fort visible offshore, and the quiet colonnaded streets that make the island feel unlike anywhere else on the Saurashtra coast.
• Allow twenty to thirty minutes here as part of a wider old-town walk.
• There is no entry fee and the monument is open through daylight hours; wear sensible footwear for the uneven stone and carry water, as shade is limited and the coastal sun is strong.
• For a meal near the gateway, keep to Diu town's pure-vegetarian kitchens.
• Simple pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali restaurants around the old town and the main market serve unlimited rotli, shaak, dal, rice, and farsan, while pure-veg South Indian counters turn out dosa, idli, and filter coffee for a lighter stop.
• Look also for pure-veg snack stalls offering dhokla, khaman, samosa, and fresh sugarcane or nariyal-pani (tender-coconut water) — an easy, refreshing bite after walking the sun-warmed lanes.
