Devalia Safari Park (Gir Interpretation Zone)

Set roughly 12 kilometres west of Sasan Gir village, the Devalia Safari Park — officially the Gir Interpretation Zone — is a fenced enclosure of about four square kilometres carved out of the greater Gir landscape so that visitors can experience its wildlife without disturbing the open sanctuary beyond.

• It exists for a practical reason: the main Gir National Park runs on a permit system with limited jeeps and no guarantee of a sighting, and it closes entirely through the monsoon.
• Devalia, by contrast, stays open across most of the year and packs representative Gir habitats — grassland, thorn scrub, teak and acacia woodland and a few waterholes — into a compact loop where the free-ranging Asiatic lions, leopards, nilgai, chital, sambar and crocodiles are far easier to encounter. Access is deliberately controlled.
• Private cars are not allowed inside; instead the forest department runs guided drives in canopied buses and, in smaller batches, jeeps, each accompanied by a trained guide and driver who track the animals' movements.
• A typical circuit lasts roughly thirty to forty-five minutes and, because the enclosure is fenced and the resident lions are habituated to vehicles, sightings are close to assured — the single biggest draw for travellers on a tight schedule who cannot risk an empty morning in the main park.
• Photography is excellent in the soft early light, and the interpretation displays near the entry gate explain Gir's ecology and the long conservation effort that brought the Asiatic lion back from the brink.
• The park runs in fixed morning and afternoon shifts and is usually closed one day a week (commonly Wednesday), so it is wise to confirm timings and book slots in advance, especially on weekends and holidays; entry and safari charges are collected on site and are revised periodically.
• It pairs naturally with a permit safari inside the main sanctuary, a visit to the Gir Interpretation Zone's information centre, and the temple-and-coast circuit around Somnath a couple of hours south.
• For meals, plan to eat in and around Sasan Gir village, which has a cluster of pure-vegetarian kitchens geared to pilgrims and wildlife tourists.
• Look for pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serving unlimited rotli, shaak, dal-bhaat, bajra rotla with white butter, kadhi and jaggery, alongside simple South Indian breakfasts of idli and dosa.
• Most forest-edge resorts and lodges also run pure-veg dining halls for house guests.
• Carry water and snacks for the drive itself, since there is no food service inside the safari zone.
