Port Blair
About Port Blair
Port Blair, on South Andaman Island, is the gateway and administrative capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands union territory — the point of entry for all flights and the port hub for the inter-island ferries that connect the archipelago's tourist circuit.
- Most travellers spend 1-2 days here before continuing to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) or Neil (Shaheed Dweep) islands, but Port Blair has sufficient heritage content for a full day.
- The Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) is the city's defining monument and one of India's most emotionally significant heritage sites: the seven-wing radial solitary-confinement prison built 1896-1906 by the British to isolate India's most dangerous political prisoners from the mainland — the independence fighters, INC activists, revolutionaries, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak's co-conspirators who were shipped here in chains.
- The museum inside documents the stories of the political prisoners with extraordinary depth; Veer Savarkar's cell (the original brick-and-iron solitary cell in which he was imprisoned for 10 years (1911-1921)) and the gallows room are the most affecting spaces.
- The Sound and Light Show (evenings, Monday-Saturday, 6 PM and 7:15 PM Hindi/English) narrates the freedom struggle stories through the illuminated jail structure — one of India's finest outdoor S&L experiences.
- The Anthropological Museum (near Sagarika Emporium) provides context for the Andamanese and Nicobarese tribal communities whose traditional territories are protected from all outsider contact.
- The North Bay Island (30-minute ferry from Phoenix Bay Jetty) offers Andaman's most accessible coral reef snorkelling for day-trippers.
- Corbyn's Cove (7 km from city centre) is the closest proper beach.
- For vegetarian travellers, Port Blair has good South Indian restaurants (the Andamanese population includes significant South Indian communities): full vegetarian meals, dosas, and the fresh coconut-based coastal preparations are available throughout the city's restaurants.
- The Aberdeen Bazaar area near the clock tower has the best street food (chaat, samosa, coconut water). November-April is comfortable.
