Buddha Jayanti Park is one of Delhi's most peaceful green retreats — roughly 80 acres of landscaped lawns, waterways and forested pathways spread across the Central Ridge in Chanakyapuri, created to honour the 2,500th anniversary of Gautam Buddha's enlightenment. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri inaugurated it on 25 October 1964 and planted a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree — a living link, gifted from Sri Lanka, to the very tree at Bodh Gaya under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

About

Buddha Jayanti Park is one of Delhi's most peaceful green retreats — roughly 80 acres of landscaped lawns, waterways and forested pathways spread across the Central Ridge in Chanakyapuri, created to honour the 2,500th anniversary of Gautam Buddha's enlightenment.

  • Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri inaugurated it on 25 October 1964 and planted a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree — a living link, gifted from Sri Lanka, to the very tree at Bodh Gaya under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
  • The park's centrepiece is a serene gilded Buddha statue, about two and a half metres tall, set on a platform on an island within the park's waterway and ringed by a circular stone fence and a circumambulatory parikrama path laid in coloured stone rings that represent the elements of the Kalachakra Mandala.
  • The statue was dedicated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1993 as a symbol of the gratitude of the Tibetan people.
  • Around it, the Ridge forest keeps the park cool, green and full of birdsong, and shaded walking trails, open lawns and quiet corners make it a favourite for morning walks, meditation and unhurried family picnics away from the city's noise.
  • For vegetarian travellers there is a vegetarian garden canteen within the park, and the pure-veg restaurants of Chanakyapuri — Sagar Ratna at The Ashok, the Gujarat Bhawan thali — are a short ride away.

Practical notes

entry is free, and the park is open daily from early morning to evening (confirm the season's closing time locally). It is at its best at dawn and in the late afternoon; being large, forested and lightly lit, it is best enjoyed in daylight while keeping to the main paths. It is a short cab or auto ride from Dhaula Kuan metro. Carry water and sun protection in summer, and allow an hour or two for a walk, the Buddha statue and the Bodhi tree.
