The Shimla-Manali circuit is Himachal Pradesh's signature itinerary — a week-long progression from the colonial grandeur of India's Summer Capital to the apple orchards and high-altitude adventure base of the Kullu Valley, connecting two of North India's most beloved hill destinations in a scenic mountain arc. The journey begins in Chandigarh (the Le Corbusier-planned modernist capital of Punjab), from where the UNESCO Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge Railway offers the iconic approach — a 5-hour steam toy-train climb through 103 tunnels, 864 bridges, and a forest-and-hamlet landscape that feels suspended in the 1905 when British engineers first built it. Days 2-4 explore Shimla: the Viceregal Lodge and Capitol precinct; the pedestrian-only Mall Road with Baljee's heritage breakfast and Indian Coffee House; the Jakhu Temple on the highest point of the ridge (2,455 m, with the panoramic view of snow peaks); and day trips to Kufri (16 km east, Himalayan views and yak rides), Chail (the world's highest cricket ground at 2,250 m), and the apple orchards of Fagu and Theog. Day 4 is the scenic Shimla-Manali road (260 km via Mandi, 7-8 hours by shared cab or Volvo bus — the Beas River gorge section between Pandoh Dam and Mandi is among the most dramatic road stretches in India). Days 5-7 explore Manali: the Hadimba Devi Temple (1553 CE pagoda-style wooden mandir in deodar forest — open 8 AM-6 PM); Old Manali's café strip (Tibetan and Israeli veg menus in riverside wooden-cabin cafés); the Vashisht hot springs (natural sulphur bathing tanks and Rama Mandir, 3 km from the Mall); the Solang Valley day trip (14 km north, paragliding, zorbing, and snow activities in March-April); and the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km, opened 2020 — the world's longest high-altitude road tunnel above 3,000 m connects Manali to Lahaul Valley year-round for the first time). For vegetarian travellers, the circuit showcases two distinct Pahari cuisines: the Himachali tradition of Shimla (siddu steamed bread, madra chickpea, rajma-chawal at cafés on the Mall) and the Manali blend of Pahari, Tibetan, and Israeli backpacker menus (veg momos, thukpa, siddu, and the Old Manali organic café scene). The best windows are March-June (clear weather, snow on peaks, apple blossom in April) and September-November (autumn colours, clear mountain views, Dussehra festival in Kullu Valley in October).
