The Malwa plateau of Madhya Pradesh, watered by the sacred Narmada and Shipra rivers, is one of the great pilgrimage and food landscapes of central India — home to two of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, the serene riverside capital of a philosopher-queen, and a city that may be India's finest for vegetarian street food. This five-day trail weaves the sacred and the savoury together. It begins in Indore, the cleanest city in India and its most celebrated street-food destination, where the Sarafa night market and the 56-stall Chappan Dukan serve poha-jalebi, garadu, and dahi vada late into the night, beside the Holkar-era Rajwada palace and the mirror-work Kanch Mandir. From Indore the trail follows the Narmada to Maheshwar, the graceful riverside town of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, with its fort and ghats above the broad river and its famous handwoven Maheshwari sarees. It continues to Omkareshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set on the sacred Mandhata island whose outline traces the shape of the syllable "ॐ," circled by a riverbank parikrama and watched over by a towering new statue of Adi Shankaracharya. The trail ends at Ujjain, one of the seven holy Saptapuri cities, where the Mahakaleshwar Temple — the only south-facing Jyotirlinga — performs its extraordinary pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, and the Shipra ghats host the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Throughout, the food is pure-vegetarian Malwa fare — poha-jalebi, dal-bafla, bhutte ka kees, sabudana, and sattvic temple prasad. The best season is October to March. Travellers with an extra day can add the dramatic cliff-top fort-city of Mandu nearby, and the trail connects easily by rail and road through Indore, the regional hub. This is a compact, deeply rewarding journey for pilgrims and food lovers alike, through the spiritual and culinary heart of the Malwa plateau and the valley of the sacred Narmada.
