The Manali–Spiti road trip is one of India's great Himalayan journeys — an eight-day crossing from the lush apple-orchard Kullu Valley into the stark Tibetan-Buddhist cold-desert of Lahaul-Spiti at altitudes between 3,500 m and 4,500 m. This is a road trip that requires preparation, acclimatisation, and respect for the high mountain environment: the route is open only mid-May to mid-October when the high passes (Kunzum La 4,551 m, the Rohtang corridor) are snow-clear, AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is common above Kunzum, and the road conditions vary from highway-quality (post the 2020 Atal Tunnel) to genuine off-road in the Spiti interior. Day one is the Manali arrival and acclimatisation day at 2,050 m — visit Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, and Vashisht hot springs. Day two is the drive over the Atal Tunnel to Lahaul and on to Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake, 4,300 m) for a high-camp night under the stars. Day three is Chandratal to Kaza via Kunzum La — the day you cross from the Kullu watershed into the Spiti basin. Day four is Kaza acclimatisation and the iconic Key Monastery (Kye Gompa) at 4,166 m. Day five is the high-altitude village circuit: Komic (one of the world's highest motorable villages at 4,587 m, with a 14th-century Buddhist monastery), Langza (the fossil village with the giant Buddha statue overlooking Spiti), and Hikkim (home to the world's highest post office at 4,440 m — send a postcard home). Day six is south to Dhankar Monastery (perched on a knife-edge ridge above the Spiti-Pin confluence) and the optional Dhankar Lake trek. Day seven is Tabo Monastery (996 CE, the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" with its 11th-century murals) and onward to Nako or Reckong Peo if exiting via the Kinnaur side. Day eight is the return to Manali via Kunzum (if circular) or the descent through Kinnaur to Shimla (if making it a one-way traverse). For the vegetarian traveller, Spiti is exceptional — the Buddhist cuisine is largely vegetarian, with thukpa (noodle soup), tingmo (steamed bread), momo, the local sea-buckthorn juice, and butter tea (po cha) as the staples. Mid-May to mid-October is the only sensible window; carry layers, Diamox (consult a physician), and a Spiti-experienced driver if self-driving is not your comfort zone.
