Dharamshala and McLeodganj reward visitors who arrive ready for a change in pace — the Tibetan cultural atmosphere, the mountain proximity, and the combination of Himalayan trekking and Buddhist dharma engagement make it uniquely different from any other Indian hill destination. Day 1 begins at McLeodganj with the Tsuglagkhang Complex (open 5 AM-8 PM, no charge): the Namgyal Monastery (the Dalai Lama's personal monastery, founded in 1575 and re-established in McLeodganj in 1959, with its central Shakyamuni Buddha and Kalachakra Avalokitesvara statues), the Tibet Museum (2 floors of photographs, testimonies, maps, and artefacts documenting the 1959 Chinese occupation and the Tibetan refugee experience — one of the most affecting museums in India; allow 2 hours), and the monastery courtyard where monks engage in formal debate (Shedra debate sessions occur most mornings — a distinctive spectacle of clapping and philosophical argumentation). The Dalai Lama's residence is on the complex grounds; his public teaching dates are published at dalailama.com and if your visit coincides, attendance is free but requires advance registration. Afternoon: Bhagsu Village (2 km easy walk from McLeodganj) for the Bhagsu Waterfall (25-metre two-tier fall, accessible via 500-metre forest path from Bhagsu village, best in post-monsoon September-October) and the old Bhagsunag Nag Temple. Evening: Jogiwara Road momo and café culture — every second restaurant serves Tibetan veg momos; Lung Ta and Nick's Italian Kitchen are the essential vegetarian stops. Day 2 is the Triund Trek: about 9 km one-way from McLeodganj (3-4 hours ascent, 2 hours descent), gaining 800 m elevation through rhododendron and oak forest to emerge at about 2,828 m onto the alpine meadow of Triund with the full Dhauladhar range panorama directly in front. The overnight option (forest department tent rental at Triund top — basic, ₹500-800 per tent) gives a star-gazing night at the snowfield's edge and the dawn colours on the Dhauladhar peaks in full pink-orange clarity; day-trekkers return by 5 PM. Day 3: Lower Dharamshala (a 10-minute drive from McLeodganj) for the Kangra Art Museum, the Chamunda Devi Temple (9 km further east, the local Shakti shrine overlooking the Manaura river gorge), and a final momo lunch before departure. The HRTC bus or prepaid cab to Pathankot (90 km, 2.5 hours) for onward rail connections to Delhi or Amritsar.
