About Daman, Diu & Saurashtra Beach Run

India's far-western coast strings together a remarkable run of seaside heritage and pilgrimage — two former Portuguese enclaves of old forts and quiet beaches, one of the twelve most sacred Shiva shrines, the last wild lions on Earth, and one of Hinduism's four holy Char Dhams — all within the state of Gujarat and its island territories.

  • This seven-day journey begins at Daman, the Indo-Portuguese town on the Gujarat coast where the 16th-century Moti Daman Fort, old churches, and casuarina-shaded beaches give a flavour of little Portugal.
  • After a long transfer down to the Saurashtra peninsula, it reaches Diu, the serene former-Portuguese island with its seaward fort of 1535, the horseshoe Nagoa beach, the rock-cut Naida Caves, and the atmospheric sea-cave shrine of Gangeshwar Mahadev.
  • From Diu the run turns to faith and wildlife: Somnath, the first and most revered of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva, standing on the Arabian Sea shore with its sunset aarti; Gir National Park, the only place on Earth where the Asiatic lion survives in the wild, tracked on a teak-forest jeep safari; and finally Dwarka, the holy Char Dham city where Lord Krishna is said to have ruled, with its towering Dwarkadhish temple and the island shrine of Bet Dwarka.
  • Throughout, the food is pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiawadi — thali, dhokla and khaman, fafda-jalebi, bajra rotla with white butter, and fresh coconut along the shore.
  • The best season is October to March, when the coast is pleasant and Gir is open (the park closes mid-June to mid-October).
  • Note that Daman and Diu lie some 650 km apart, so the transfer between them is a full travel day; this run rewards travellers who enjoy a mix of beach, heritage, pilgrimage, and wildlife in a single sweep, with Porbandar — the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi — a worthwhile pause on the final leg to Dwarka.
