About Assam & Ziro Valley Northeast Loop

This seven-day loop follows the mighty Brahmaputra up through upper Assam and into the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, combining wildlife, tea, river-island spirituality, and tribal culture in one of the most rewarding and least-crowded journeys in the Indian northeast.

  • It begins in Guwahati, Assam's gateway city, with the hilltop Kamakhya temple and the wide Brahmaputra at sunset.
  • From there it runs east to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shelters two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinos, tracked on dawn jeep and elephant-back safaris across dewy grassland.
  • The loop continues to Jorhat, the "Tea Capital" of Assam, surrounded by manicured estates and home to the 1911 Tocklai Tea Research Institute and the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, the only home in India of the western hoolock gibbon.
  • From Jorhat a short ferry across the Brahmaputra reaches Majuli, the largest river island in the world and the spiritual heart of Assam — a flat green world of rice fields and bamboo stilt-houses, where the neo-Vaishnavite satra monasteries preserve centuries-old traditions of Sattriya dance, manuscript painting, and the famous Majuli mask-making.
  • Finally the loop climbs into Arunachal Pradesh to the Ziro Valley, a serene plateau of pine ridges and emerald rice terraces that is the homeland of the Apatani tribe, whose ingenious wet-rice cultivation has earned the valley a place on UNESCO's tentative list.
  • Throughout, the food is kept vegetarian — Assamese khar and pitika, fresh estate Assam tea, satra bhog on Majuli, and Apatani rice with bamboo shoot and mountain greens.
  • Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal (easily obtained, including at Jorhat).
  • The best season is October to April.
  • The roads beyond Kaziranga are slower and the Brahmaputra ferries are weather-dependent, so the relaxed seven-day pace, with a flexible day or two in hand, suits this less-trodden corner of India.
  • It is a deep, unhurried immersion in the rivers, tea gardens, and tribal cultures of the eastern Brahmaputra.
