About Agra in Two Days
Two days in Agra resolves the itinerary dilemma that defeats first-time visitors trying to fit too much into a single rushed day. With two full days, you give the Taj Mahal the unhurried early morning it deserves, and you visit Fatehpur Sikri as a dedicated full-day excursion rather than a hurried add-on.
- Both experiences benefit from the additional time: the Taj is best absorbed without the psychological pressure of a tight schedule; Fatehpur Sikri's walled city covers six square kilometres and contains enough architectural detail for an entire day of attentive exploration.
- Day 1 follows the optimal 1-day Agra sequence.
- The Taj at sunrise is the non-negotiable opening — entry from the East Gate 30 minutes before sunrise, when the marble turns from grey to pink to white as the light strengthens, and the garden pools are still.
- Agra Fort follows at mid-morning when the stone corridors are still in shadow and the heat is manageable.
- Mehtab Bagh closes the day at sunset with its incomparable view of the Taj across the Yamuna.
- The evening belongs to Agra proper: Sadar Bazar for the atmosphere of a working North Indian market, dinner at Pinch of Spice or another Fatehabad Road restaurant, and petha acquisition at Panchi Petha for the journey home.
- Day 2 is Fatehpur Sikri — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that earns its designation with a completeness and artistic coherence that few Mughal complexes rival.
- Akbar built it as his new imperial capital in 1571; the complex was abandoned in 1585, most likely due to water scarcity, leaving a ghost capital in near-perfect condition: the Panch Mahal five-storey pavilion, Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Birbal ka Mahal, Jodha Bai's Palace, and the 54-metre Buland Darwaza — the Gate of Victory, the highest gateway in India.
- A thorough visit requires 4–5 hours; allow 1 hour for the 45-km drive each way.
- Food near Fatehpur Sikri is limited to modest dhabas outside the main gate — pack a vegetarian lunch from Agra and carry Panchi Petha boxes as travel snacks.
- The drive through Braj-region agricultural countryside is unhurried and photogenic.
