About Gangtok

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim at 1,650 m on a ridge of the Himalayan foothills, combines the functions of a busy Indian hill-station market town with the contemplative Buddhist culture of a Himalayan monastic tradition and one of India's most spectacular mountain viewpoints.

  • The city is divided between the lower commercial hub (MG Marg — the pedestrianised main street lined with Sikkimese handicraft shops, momos stalls, and the famous Starlight Café) and the upper ridge viewpoints (Tashi Viewpoint and Ganesh Tok, where on clear mornings the full Kanchenjunga massif rises above the clouds — the best view from a road-accessible point in eastern India).
  • Rumtek Monastery, 24 km from Gangtok, is the seat of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism — one of the four major schools — and one of the most significant Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet.
  • The Black Hat Ceremony (Tsurpu Mask Dance) performed at Rumtek is among the most spectacular Tibetan ritual events in India.
  • The Enchey Monastery (inside Gangtok, 3 km from MG Marg, 200 years old) has the freshest atmosphere for solo morning visits.
  • Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, 38 km east of Gangtok at 3,780 m on the old Nathula trade route (requiring a Protected Area Permit, easily arranged by hotels — ₹100 for Indian nationals), is a glacial lake that freezes in winter, thaws in spring when primulas bloom on its banks, and reflects the surrounding snowfields in brilliant still water.
  • Nathula Pass (56 km from Gangtok, 4,310 m, India-China border, requires additional permit, open to Indians only) is one of the highest road-accessible border crossings in the world.
  • For vegetarian travellers, Gangtok is excellent: Sikkim's fully organic status means all produce is chemical-free.
  • Dal-bhat-tarkari (the complete Nepali vegetarian meal — lentil soup, steamed rice, and seasonal vegetable curry — is the daily staple), gundruk soup (fermented dried greens, the Himalayan superfood winter staple), vegetable momos from the Tibetan tradition, and thukpa.
  • MG Marg cafés serve both Sikkimese and continental vegetarian menus.
  • March-May and October-December are the best windows.
