Sudama Mandir, Porbandar

Rising in gleaming white marble amid the salt-laced streets of Porbandar, Sudama Mandir is believed to be one of the very few temples in India dedicated to Sudama, the impoverished Brahmin who, by tradition, was the boyhood friend of Lord Krishna.

• The story that gives the shrine its meaning is among the most tender in Hindu lore: Sudama, too poor to bring a worthy gift, carried a small pouch of beaten rice to the palace at Dwarka, and Krishna — overwhelmed with affection — repaid the humble offering with boundless prosperity.
• Porbandar, traditionally identified with the Sudamapuri of legend, has honoured that friendship for generations, and the temple keeps the tale alive for every pilgrim who steps through its gates.
• The complex is a study in calm symmetry.
• A multi-tiered marble shikhara crowns the sanctum, while the courtyard is celebrated for its labyrinth — a concentric maze pilgrims walk in meditative circuits, said to symbolise the winding path of devotion that leads, eventually, to the divine centre.
• Cool marble underfoot, latticed screens, and inscriptions drawn from the friendship of Krishna and Sudama lend the place an unhurried, contemplative air quite distinct from the thronged energy of Dwarka's Jagat Mandir.
• The shrine is thought to have taken its present form in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, though the devotional association with the site is far older.
• Porbandar sits roughly 100 kilometres south of Dwarka along the Saurashtra coast, which makes Sudama Mandir a natural, gentle counterpoint on a Dwarka-circuit itinerary — often paired the same day with Kirti Mandir, the heritage memorial marking the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi a short walk away.
• Together they let a traveller move from myth to modern history within a single afternoon.
• For a pure-vegetarian meal, Porbandar's town centre near Manek Chowk and the Kirti Mandir lane holds several pure-veg Gujarati thali houses serving the unlimited Kathiyawadi thali — bajra rotla, ringan-bateta shaak, kadhi, khichdi and jaggery — alongside simple pure-veg farsan counters and South Indian tiffin rooms.
• Many pilgrims also eat at pure-veg bhojanalayas close to the temple, and cool chaas (buttermilk) is the standard antidote to the coastal heat.
