Mokarsagar Wetland (Gosabara)

Spread across shallow marshes, reed beds and shining sheets of open water on the outskirts of Porbandar, the Mokarsagar wetland complex — often called Gosabara after one of its villages — is one of Saurashtra's great gatherings of birds.

• It is a mosaic of freshwater and mildly brackish pools fed by monsoon runoff and seasonal channels, and in the cool months from roughly November to February it swells with migratory flocks that have crossed continents to winter on the Kathiawar coast.
• Recognised as an Important Bird Area, the wetland sits within easy reach of the Krishna pilgrimage circuit around Dwarka, making it an unexpected wild counterpoint to the temple towns.
• The spectacle here is one of sheer numbers.
• Both greater and lesser flamingos wade the far shallows in loose pink ribbons; great white pelicans and Dalmatian pelicans cruise the deeper water; and by tradition it is among the more reliable Gujarat sites for the common crane, whose bugling calls carry across the reeds at dawn.
• Ducks and geese arrive in their thousands — northern pintail, northern shoveler, gadwall, teal and bar-headed geese among them — alongside painted storks, spoonbills, ibises, herons and clouds of waders working the mud.
• Birdwatchers scan the margins for raptors and the occasional rarity, and the low winter light over the water rewards patient photographers.
• Mokarsagar is best explored slowly and quietly in the early morning or late afternoon, when birds are most active and the heat is gentle.
• There is no formal ticketed gate; a local guide from Porbandar and a good pair of binoculars transform the visit.
• Keep to the tracks and bunds, avoid disturbing roosting flocks, and carry water, sun protection and a hat — shade is scarce on the open flats.
• Numbers vary year to year with the monsoon, so treat sightings as a happy gamble rather than a guarantee.
• For meals, plan to eat back in Porbandar town, a short drive west, where pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serve unlimited platters of rotli, shaak, dal, rice, farsan and jaggery-sweet touches.
• Simple pure-veg bhojanalayas and snack counters near the bus stand and the Kirti Mandir area offer fresh fafda-jalebi, dhokla, khaman and hot chai.
• Carry your own water and a packed vegetarian snack for the wetland itself, as there are no reliable pure-veg eateries out at the marshes.
