Kirti Mandir & Gandhi Birthplace, Porbandar

In the old quarter of Porbandar, a coastal town on the Kathiawar peninsula about a half-day's drive south of Dwarka, stands the modest three-storey haveli where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi — later the Mahatma — was born on 2 October 1869.

• This warren of dim, low-ceilinged rooms was the ancestral home of the Gandhi family, whose forebears served as diwans (chief ministers) to the local princely rulers.
• A simple swastika set into the floor marks the traditional spot where Gandhi is said to have been born, and the creaking wooden staircases, shuttered windows and bare rooms give a vivid, unvarnished sense of the merchant-class household that shaped his early years.
• It is a place of quiet reflection rather than spectacle, and pilgrims of the freedom struggle come here much as travellers come to Dwarka's temples.
• Adjoining the birth-house is Kirti Mandir, a tall, ornate memorial completed in 1950 and funded by the industrialist Nanji Kalidas Mehta.
• Though its name means "temple of glory" and its architecture borrows temple motifs, it is a secular memorial, not a place of worship — its height was deliberately built to a number of feet that echoes Gandhi's lifespan.
• Inside are a prayer hall, a library, a small museum of photographs and personal effects, and a spinning-wheel display recalling the khadi movement.
• A statue of Gandhi with Kasturba, his wife, sits within the complex, and the surrounding lanes remain much as they were a century ago.
• Together the two sites form one of India's most understated heritage stops — factual, non-partisan, and free of pageantry.
• Allow about three-quarters of an hour to wander both, ideally in the cool morning light.
• For food, Porbandar sits in dry, strongly vegetarian Gujarat, and the streets near Kirti Mandir hold several pure-veg Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serving unlimited platters of rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi and rice.
• Simpler pure-veg cafes and farsan shops nearby turn out khaman, fafda, dhokla and hot ganthiya with masala chai — a wholly satisfying, alcohol-free bite before the drive back toward Dwarka.
