Bileshwar (Bilnath) Mahadev Temple

Tucked into the quiet farming village of Bileshwar in Ranavav taluka, roughly a half-hour inland from Porbandar, the Bileshwar (Bilnath) Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest living Shiva shrines in Saurashtra.

• Devotees gather here around a Swayambhu lingam — a lingam that, by tradition, is believed to have emerged of its own accord rather than being installed by human hands — and the surrounding village takes its very name from the deity, Bilnath or Bileshwar, a form of Shiva.
• For pilgrims making the long westward loop through Dwarka, Nageshwar and Porbandar, this understated country temple offers a slower, more contemplative counterpoint to the crowded coastal shrines.
• The temple's real distinction is its antiquity.
• Its weathered stone sanctum is generally attributed to the Maitraka period of about the seventh century — the dynasty that ruled Saurashtra from their capital at Vallabhi — which places it among the earliest surviving structural temples anywhere in the region.
• Though the fabric has been repaired, extended and reworked many times over the intervening centuries, scholars and the Archaeological Survey of India value the core shrine as a rare, largely intact example of early Gujarati temple building, and it is protected as a monument of national importance.
• Walk around the plinth and you can read that long history in the joins between old and newer masonry.
• Practically, Bileshwar is a working village temple rather than a groomed tourist site, so expect simplicity: an open courtyard, a modest mandapa, priests performing daily abhishekam, and a steady trickle of local worshippers, especially on Mondays and during the month of Shravan and the festival of Mahashivratri, when the shrine draws its largest gatherings.
• Dress modestly, remove footwear before entering, and treat the sanctum as an active place of prayer.
• There is little formal signage, so a local guide or a Porbandar-based driver helps.
• For food, the village itself has only the most basic tea stalls, so plan to eat in Porbandar or the small town of Ranavav, both of which have pure-vegetarian Gujarati and Kathiyawadi thali houses serving unlimited rotli, shaak, dal, kadhi, rice and jaggery-sweet touches.
• Simple pure-veg bhojanalayas near Porbandar's Sudama Setu and Kirti Mandir area are reliable for a wholesome sit-down thali, and roadside stalls around Ranavav offer fresh fafda, gathiya, dhokla and hot chai for a quick bite before or after your temple visit.
