Sunset boat rides on Lake Pichola sell out fast in winter; book at the City Palace ghat by 4 PM

Udaipur is the capital of the former Mewar kingdom and arguably India's most romantic city. Built around the artificial Lake Pichola in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, the old city is a maze of narrow lanes, hilltop palaces, and ghats descending into the lake. The City Palace — a continuous complex of eleven palaces overlooking Pichola — is one of India's great royal residences, still partly home to the Mewar royal family and partly a museum. From the palace ghats, evening boat rides cross to Jagmandir Island; the island's twin, Jag Niwas, hosts the Lake Palace hotel that floats like a wedding cake on the water. Beyond the lake, Udaipur offers the rooftop restaurants of the old city (Ambrai, Upre, Jagat Niwas — all with palace views), the Bagore-ki-Haveli folk museum, and short excursions to Eklingji Temple, Nagda, and the cool hill station of Mount Abu. For vegetarian travellers, Udaipur's Mewari cuisine is plant-based by tradition — try dal-baati-churma, gatte ki sabzi, the unique Mewari kadhi, and the local saffron sweet alwar ka mawa. October to March is the perfect window with cool evenings ideal for lakeside dining; April-June heat exceeds 40°C. Udaipur is the third or fourth stop on the Royal Rajasthan Loop and is the natural place to slow down for two nights minimum.
