Ram Bagh, also known as Aram Bagh (Garden of Rest), holds a unique distinction in Indian history: it is the oldest surviving Mughal garden in the country, laid out by Emperor Babur himself in 1528, just two years after he founded the Mughal dynasty following his victory at the First Battle of Panipat. Babur designed the garden in the Central Asian char-bagh (four-quadrant) style that he had known in Samarkand and Kabul — a formal, geometrically symmetrical layout divided by water channels into four equal sections, with pavilions at key intersections and terraced walkways along the Yamuna riverbank. The garden served as his personal retreat and, briefly, as his temporary resting place after his death in 1530 before his body was transferred to his beloved Kabul.

The garden is relatively modest in scale compared to the elaborate Mughal gardens of later periods — Babur was still in the first years of establishing his dynasty and was building in a new, unfamiliar landscape. Yet it established the template that would eventually produce the gardens of the Taj Mahal, Humayun's Tomb, and Mehtab Bagh. The water channels, though no longer fed by their original saqiya (Persian wheel) irrigation system, are still largely intact. The Yamuna-facing terrace offers pleasant views across the river toward the Taj Mahal dome in the distance, visible on clear mornings.

For vegetarian travellers, Ram Bagh is one of Agra's most peaceful escapes: far fewer visitors than the main UNESCO circuit, a large and shaded garden for comfortable walking, and genuine historical significance as the prototype of all Mughal garden design in India. No food is available within the garden — carry water and snacks from the city. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and is open for a modest entry fee. Its north Yamuna bank location makes it easy to combine with a Mehtab Bagh visit in an upriver half-day excursion.
