Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana and historically the seat of the Nizams — the world's wealthiest family in the early 20th century. The defining old-city sight is the Charminar, a 1591 four-minaret arch at the heart of the bustling Laad Bazaar (famous for lac bangles and pearls — Hyderabad has been India's pearl-trading capital for 400 years). Nearby is the Chowmahalla Palace — the Nizams' formal residence with its courtyards, durbar hall, and royal car collection. To the west of the city, Golconda Fort offers a hilltop sunset experience with India's most famous fort sound-and-light show (the original; many forts copied this format from Golconda). The Qutb Shahi Tombs nearby are a quieter, garden-set complement. For vegetarian travellers, Hyderabad's defining dish is the vegetarian Hyderabadi biryani — long-grained basmati cooked dum-style under a sealed dough lid with paneer, vegetables, ghee, saffron, and the city's signature kewra (screwpine) water. Try it at Bawarchi (RTC X Roads), Paradise (Secunderabad), or Shadab (Charminar). The city's Andhra-Telugu vegetarian thali is a different but equally legendary experience: pulihora (tamarind rice), gongura pachadi, pesarattu (green-gram dosa), and unlimited papad. October to February is the comfortable window; April-June heat exceeds 42°C.
