Goa is India's smallest state by area but one of its most distinctive — a 100-km strip of Konkan coast that pairs world-class beaches with the Konkani-Hindu food traditions of its inland villages. For first-time visitors the state divides naturally into two zones. North Goa, anchored by Panaji (the state capital) and the beach belt of Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, and Arambol, has the livelier markets, the famous flea bazaars, and a younger crowd. South Goa, around Madgaon and the quieter beaches of Colva, Palolem, Agonda, and Patnem, is the family-friendly half — wider beaches, fewer crowds, more boutique heritage hotels in restored Konkani mansions. For vegetarian travellers, the Goan Saraswat-Brahmin community has a centuries-old culinary repertoire that the beach-shack scene tends to overlook. Look for sannas (steamed coconut-rice cakes), khatkhate (mixed-vegetable coconut-toor-dal stew), patal bhaji (taro-leaf curry), Goan veg xacuti (coconut-spice masala curry with potatoes and chickpeas), mushroom cafreal (green-chilli paste), and the celebrated bebinca — the 16-layer coconut dessert that defines Goan sweets (eggless versions are widely available at Konkani-Hindu sweet shops). The best season is November to February when the air is dry and warm and the ocean is calm. June to September is the southwest monsoon — dramatic rains, lush green hinterland, hotel rates at half, but most beach water-sports paused. Goa is well-connected by air (Goa International Airport at Dabolim and the new Manohar International Airport at Mopa in north Goa), by train (Madgaon and Karmali stations on the Konkan Railway), and by road (NH-66 from Mumbai is a 12-hour drive).
