परिचय
The Agra Bear Rescue Facility, operated by Wildlife SOS at Sur Sarovar (Keetham Lake), is one of India's most impactful wildlife conservation stories and one of the most meaningful responsible-travel experiences available to visitors in the Agra region. The facility houses over 100 rescued Sloth Bears — animals formerly exploited in the traditional dancing-bear trade, a practice involving poaching bear cubs and training them to perform on the street. Wildlife SOS has worked since the 1990s to rehabilitate both the bears and the human communities dependent on the trade, providing alternative livelihoods while ending the practice entirely.
Guided visits allow travellers to observe the bears in large naturalistic enclosures where they forage, play, and engage in natural behaviours. The guides are knowledgeable about individual bears' rescue stories, rehabilitation journeys, and personalities — creating a deeply personal wildlife experience quite unlike a zoo visit. The bears are not performing, not chained, and not interacted with by visitors; the visit is conducted at respectful distance from outside the enclosures, prioritising animal welfare throughout.
For responsible travellers, the Bear Rescue Facility represents the highest standard of ethical wildlife tourism in India: no animal contact, no performance, verified conservation outcomes, and direct community development impact. Advance booking is mandatory — walk-in visits are not accommodated. The facility is located within the Keetham Lake (Sur Sarovar) sanctuary complex; combine with a morning bird walk at the lake before the midday bear visit. All proceeds from visitor fees support ongoing rescue operations and bear care.
