The lawns surrounding India Gate are one of Delhi's great democratic spaces. Every evening — and especially on weekends, public holidays, and the cool months between October and March — thousands of Delhiites converge here for picnics, walks, and the ritual of watching the war memorial illuminate at dusk. Threading through the crowds are dozens of licensed street-food carts, each specialising in a single item, that together constitute one of Delhi's most authentic walking-snack ecosystems. For travellers, eating from these carts is not just a meal — it is a way of participating in the city's most-loved evening ritual.

India Gate Lawns, Rajpath / Kartavya Path, New Delhi 110001. Nearest metro: Central Secretariat (Yellow/Violet Line), 1.5 km — 5-minute auto-rickshaw or 20-minute walk. Paid parking on either side of Rajpath (₹50/hour); arrive by metro on weekends and public holidays.

Choose vendors with visible licence numbers and food assembled in front of you. Use the Kartavya Path public washrooms (₹5, clean) — they are a 5-minute walk from the central lawn. Visit 90 minutes around sunset for the best ambience.
